How Often Should You Get a Teeth Cleaning?

Most people know they should see a dentist regularly, but the question of how often teeth-cleaning appointments should be scheduled is one we hear all the time. The honest answer is that it depends, and understanding what it depends on can actually help you take better care of your teeth in between visits.

The Standard Recommendation (And Why It Exists)

The twice-a-year rule has been around for decades, and for good reason. Every six months gives us a consistent window to remove tartar buildup that brushing and flossing simply can’t reach, check for early signs of decay or gum disease, and catch small problems before they turn into bigger ones.

That said, not everyone fits neatly into a twice-a-year schedule. Some patients do well with annual cleanings, while others need to come in every 3 to 4 months. It’s not about being high-maintenance; it’s about what your mouth actually needs.

Factors That Affect How Frequently You Should Come In

A few things influence how often we recommend scheduling your cleaning:

  • Gum disease or a history of it. Patients managing periodontal disease often benefit from more frequent visits to keep bacterial levels under control.
  • Plaque and tartar buildup rate. Some people naturally accumulate more tartar than others, regardless of how well they brush.
  • Dry mouth. Saliva helps neutralize acids and rinse away bacteria. Without enough of it, your risk for decay goes up.
  • Diabetes or other systemic conditions. Certain health conditions affect oral health in ways that warrant more frequent monitoring.
  • Smoking or tobacco use. This increases the risk of gum disease and oral cancer, both of which we screen for during cleanings.
  • Pregnancy. Hormonal changes can make gums more sensitive and prone to inflammation, so we often recommend more frequent visits during pregnancy.

If any of these apply to you, a six-month schedule might not be enough. The good news is that catching this early means we can adjust before any real damage sets in.

What Actually Happens During a Cleaning

A lot of patients are surprised by how much goes into a routine cleaning. It’s not just a quick polish. During your visit, we remove plaque and hardened tartar from the surfaces of your teeth and along the gumline, check the depth of the pockets around your gums, take X-rays as needed, screen for signs of decay or oral abnormalities, and go over any areas where your home care routine could be stronger.

It’s also a chance to ask questions. If something feels off, if you’ve noticed sensitivity, bleeding gums, or anything unusual, a cleaning appointment is the right time to bring it up.

How Often Teeth Cleaning Visits Connect to Your Overall Health

The relationship between oral health and overall health is well-documented. Gum disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes complications, and respiratory issues. Regular cleanings don’t just protect your teeth; they also reduce the bacterial load in your mouth, which can contribute to systemic inflammation.

This is one reason we take cleanings seriously as part of our general dentistry approach, not just a box to check. It’s preventive care in the truest sense.

What Happens If You Skip Cleanings

Skipping cleanings might not feel urgent in the moment, but the effects tend to compound. Tartar that isn’t removed hardens and irritates the gumline. Gum disease that isn’t caught early can progress to deeper tissues and eventually lead to bone loss. Decay that might have been a small filling can become a root canal or extraction.

The cost of prevention is almost always lower than the cost of treatment, in terms of time, money, and discomfort.

What to Expect at Dunkleberger Dental

Dr. Elizabeth Dunkleberger and our team take a practical approach to preventive care. We look at your full health history, your current oral health status, and your habits to give you a cleaning schedule that actually makes sense for you. If it turns out you need something beyond a routine cleaning, like scaling and root planing for early gum disease, we’ll explain exactly what that involves and why.

Beyond cleanings, we also offer a full range of cosmetic dentistry services for patients who want to address the appearance of their smile alongside their oral health. But it always starts with making sure the foundation is solid.

Dr. D and staff are always friendly and accommodating. Unfortunately I have a bad gag reflex and her staff has many different ways to help me when I get X-rays. My wife saw them for an emergency tooth ache and although her issue was beyond what they could do Dr. D gave a recommendation and her husband James called on my wife’s behalf and made her an appointment for the next day because she was in so much pain. Thanks again for such great customer service. Tim and Jen
